If you had read my earlier post on our Pattaya trip outline, you would know that we spent our first day at Swiss Sheep Farm Pattaya! I know it sounds crazy that we took a 6am flight out of Singapore but it’s not as though we had not done anything like this before. Haha! We just wanted to make the most out of our short trip!
Nov 30, 2012 Holistic pet care has become an ingrained part of the lives of pet lovers and ensuring that pets get the best in holistic nutrition is an important part of that equation. The pet food industry has changed a great deal since Grandma and I spent our evenings chopping up leftovers for Red. From our Homeaway accommodation at Jomtien area, it took us about 30 minutes to reach Swiss Sheep Farm by car. The beautiful, charming and rustic Swiss-inspired architecture make Swiss Sheep Farm a nice place to visit if you enjoy taking photos. Besides that, there are many animals which you can feed at the farm.
The weather wasn’t the most ideal throughout our entire trip and it even rained on our way to the farm. Thankfully, it wasn’t raining when we reached but the skies were quite gloomy.
I got our tickets via Klook. Definitely very convenient as I simply flashed the voucher (in the form of a QR code) on my mobile phone and we managed to get in without any hiccups.
Look at these cute alpacas! All busy munching grass except for one!
I swear that I actually thought these goats were statues because there were completely still for a few minutes, until one of them turned its head ever so slightly.
The kids were so delighted that we got to see the goats up close but this was only the beginning!
Little misschewy saw some grass lying around and couldnt resist feeding the goats.
Initially, we had thought that these goats were the only animals that we would be feeding and spent quite some time there until one of the workers gestured that there were MORE waiting to be fed. LOL. Look at all these sheep!
Little misschewy was really enthusiastic about feeding the animals because when she had finished giving out all the grass, she went round picking more from the ground! The admission ticket comes with a coupon which you can exchange for a handful of grass. Additional animal food such as milk and carrots can be purchased separately at a small fee.
This sheep really very garang! It jumped over the fence and sort of chased after us. Little misschewy was really brave and calm, while I ran away screaming like a mad woman, with a bunch of grass in my hand.
Isn’t the horse cute? Looked like it was smiling ya?
I’m not sure if they rotate the horses for “horse riding duties” lol but this horse was the one and only one at the Horse Station.
It was roughly a 10-minute ride and the route includes crossing a bridge before looping back.

Apart from interacting with the animals, we also had fun taking photos at various spots at the farm! It was a good and bad thing that there weren’t many people at the farm. Good because you get nice photos without any “extras” in the frame, and bad because it’s so hard to find someone to help you with group shots! We only had three family shots! Highly recommend you bring a selfie stick or a tripod.
The weather was really hot and humid, so we were happy to see ice cream! Plus it was so cheap! Three scoops at around 80 baht, which is like SGD $3?! We had the cotton candy, yam and chocolate (hidden from view) flavors.
There were really many nice spots for photo-taking at Swiss Sheep Farm but the kids started to show signs of fatigue, hence we decided to call it a day. We also stopped by the souvenir shop to get some magnets before leaving!

Amy Corash, aquatics category manager at Hartz Mountain Corportion, discusses the development of fish nutrition through the years, including the latest trend–fish treats.
Pet Frenzy Game
Pet Business: How has the fish food category evolved over the years?
Amy Corash: In the mid-20th century, businesses started to get involved in manufacturing fish food. Most of the fish food at that time was granular and came from ground up dog food. As the category developed, manufacturers began to create more sophisticated feeding options and started tailoring the types of fish food being fed in aquariums.
Increased scientific methods gradually became part of the formulation process, with manufacturers placing an importance on their research and development departments, developing species-specific food that would provide for the basic needs of aquarium fish. Since then, species-specific food has gone from providing the basic nutritional requirements that fish need to survive to providing optimal nutrition with carefully developed formulas. These advancements have resulted in an improved quality of life for fish, through foods that help both them, and their overall habitat, thrive, resulting in higher levels of enjoyment for fish owners.
PB: Can you tell us about the development of the fish treat subcategory and its current role in the consumer market?
Corash: As consumers think about what treats to feed their fish, they look to how they treat themselves. Treats are a developing segment that provide needed variety in a diet and offer a great source of added nutrition for fish.
Manufacturers on the cutting edge will continue to research ways to provide the next innovation in treating fish. They will ensure the result is a nutritious treat and clean water, which consumers and fish nutritionists agree are the most important aspects for good fish health.
More and more, consumers are recognizing the benefit of healthy treats for themselves, and we see this interest influencing how consumers choose the foods they give their fish.
PB: What tips do you have for retailers when it comes to merchandising fish food?
Corash: Aquatics consumers are loyal to the brands that have helped them successfully keep their fish healthy and thriving. Retailers can best market products through careful product selection–by offering brands that have years of experience and expertise and formulas that have been developed through research and testing. They should look for brands with high household penetration that are likely to be recommended by strong word of mouth. Word of mouth is a key purchase influencer in the aquatics edibles category.
PB: What do consumers need to understand about fish nutrition in order to provide the best food for their fish?
Corash: Providing the essential amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals at ideal levels for each species will ensure fish thrive in your tank. Species-specific formulations are important as different fish species have different nutritional needs.
Take protein for example: some fish are carnivorous and require a high protein level, while others are herbivorous and that same high protein level would be unnecessary. For instance, goldfish don’t require the protein level that tropical fish do. A protein level in the range of 30-35 percent will provide goldfish a healthy level of protein without over-supplementing, which can lead to dirty water and an unhealthy environment.
